King James Version
1. Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2. that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. 3. And the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." 4. There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. 5. Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7. So the LORD said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." 8. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. 9. This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God. 10. And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11. The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12. So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13. And God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14. "Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. 15. "And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16. "You shall make a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks . 17. "And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. 18. "But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark––you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19. "And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20. "Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. 21. "And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and for them." 22. Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.
1. Then the LORD said to Noah, "Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation. 2. "You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; 3. "also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth. 4. "For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made." 5. And Noah did according to all that the LORD commanded him. 6. Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth. 7. So Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood. 8. Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth, 9. two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10. And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth. 11. In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. 12. And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights. 13. On the very same day Noah and Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark–– 14. they and every beast after its kind, all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort. 15. And they went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh in which is the breath of life. 16. So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the LORD shut him in. 17. Now the flood was on the earth forty days. The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. 18. The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, and the ark moved about on the surface of the waters. 19. And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. 20. The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and the mountains were covered. 21. And all flesh died that moved on the earth: birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man. 22. All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land , died. 23. So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive . 24. And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days.
1. Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the descendants of the captivity were building the temple of the LORD God of Israel, 2. they came to Zerubbabel and the heads of the fathers’ houses , and said to them, "Let us build with you, for we seek your God as you do ; and we have sacrificed to Him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us here." 3. But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the fathers’ houses of Israel said to them, "You may do nothing with us to build a house for our God; but we alone will build to the LORD God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us." 4. Then the people of the land tried to discourage the people of Judah. They troubled them in building, 5. and hired counselors against them to frustrate their purpose all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia. 6. In the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. 7. In the days of Artaxerxes also, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabel, and the rest of their companions wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the letter was written in Aramaic script, and translated into the Aramaic language. 8. Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes in this fashion: 9. From Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions–– representatives of the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the people of Persia and Erech and Babylon and Shushan, the Dehavites, the Elamites, 10. and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnapper took captive and settled in the cities of Samaria and the remainder beyond the River––and so forth. 11. (This is a copy of the letter that they sent him) To King Artaxerxes from your servants, the men of the region beyond the River, and so forth: 12. Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us at Jerusalem, and are building the rebellious and evil city, and are finishing its walls and repairing the foundations. 13. Let it now be known to the king that, if this city is built and the walls completed, they will not pay tax, tribute, or custom, and the king’s treasury will be diminished. 14. Now because we receive support from the palace, it was not proper for us to see the king’s dishonor; therefore we have sent and informed the king, 15. that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. And you will find in the book of the records and know that this city is a rebellious city, harmful to kings and provinces, and that they have incited sedition within the city in former times, for which cause this city was destroyed. 16. We inform the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are completed, the result will be that you will have no dominion beyond the River. 17. The king sent an answer: To Rehum the commander, to Shimshai the scribe, to the rest of their companions who dwell in Samaria, and to the remainder beyond the River: Peace, and so forth. 18. The letter which you sent to us has been clearly read before me. 19. And I gave the command, and a search has been made, and it was found that this city in former times has revolted against kings, and rebellion and sedition have been fostered in it. 20. There have also been mighty kings over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all the region beyond the River; and tax, tribute, and custom were paid to them. 21. Now give the command to make these men cease, that this city may not be built until the command is given by me. 22. Take heed now that you do not fail to do this. Why should damage increase to the hurt of the kings? 23. Now when the copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem against the Jews, and by force of arms made them cease. 24. Thus the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem ceased, and it was discontinued until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
1. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." 4. But He answered and said, "It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’" 5. Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6. and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’" 7. Jesus said to him, "It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’" 8. Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9. And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me." 10. Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’" 11. Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him. 12. Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. 13. And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14. that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: 15. "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: 16. The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned." 17. From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 18. And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19. Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." 20. They immediately left their nets and followed Him. 21. Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, 22. and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him. 23. And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. 24. Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon–possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them. 25. Great multitudes followed Him––from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.
