1. Then it came to pass, at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh had a dream; and behold, he stood by the river. 2. Suddenly there came up out of the river seven cows, fine looking and fat; and they fed in the meadow. 3. Then behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the river, ugly and gaunt, and stood by the other cows on the bank of the river. 4. And the ugly and gaunt cows ate up the seven fine looking and fat cows. So Pharaoh awoke. 5. He slept and dreamed a second time; and suddenly seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, plump and good. 6. Then behold, seven thin heads, blighted by the east wind, sprang up after them. 7. And the seven thin heads devoured the seven plump and full heads. So Pharaoh awoke, and indeed, it was a dream. 8. Now it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men. And Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them for Pharaoh. 9. Then the chief butler spoke to Pharaoh, saying: "I remember my faults this day. 10. "When Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, both me and the chief baker, 11. "we each had a dream in one night, he and I. Each of us dreamed according to the interpretation of his own dream. 12. "Now there was a young Hebrew man with us there, a servant of the captain of the guard. And we told him, and he interpreted our dreams for us; to each man he interpreted according to his own dream. 13. "And it came to pass, just as he interpreted for us, so it happened. He restored me to my office, and he hanged him." 14. Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him quickly out of the dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh. 15. And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that you can understand a dream, to interpret it." 16. So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, " It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace." 17. Then Pharaoh said to Joseph: "Behold, in my dream I stood on the bank of the river. 18. "Suddenly seven cows came up out of the river, fine looking and fat; and they fed in the meadow. 19. "Then behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly and gaunt, such ugliness as I have never seen in all the land of Egypt. 20. "And the gaunt and ugly cows ate up the first seven, the fat cows. 21. "When they had eaten them up, no one would have known that they had eaten them, for they were just as ugly as at the beginning. So I awoke. 22. "Also I saw in my dream, and suddenly seven heads came up on one stalk, full and good. 23. "Then behold, seven heads, withered, thin, and blighted by the east wind, sprang up after them. 24. "And the thin heads devoured the seven good heads. So I told this to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me." 25. Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dreams of Pharaoh are one; God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do: 26. "The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads are seven years; the dreams are one. 27. "And the seven thin and ugly cows which came up after them are seven years, and the seven empty heads blighted by the east wind are seven years of famine. 28. "This is the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do. 29. "Indeed seven years of great plenty will come throughout all the land of Egypt; 30. "but after them seven years of famine will arise, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine will deplete the land. 31. "So the plenty will not be known in the land because of the famine following, for it will be very severe. 32. "And the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. 33. "Now therefore, let Pharaoh select a discerning and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt. 34. "Let Pharaoh do this , and let him appoint officers over the land, to collect one–fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven plentiful years. 35. "And let them gather all the food of those good years that are coming, and store up grain under the authority of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. 36. "Then that food shall be as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land may not perish during the famine."
1. "Behold, my eye has seen all this , My ear has heard and understood it. 2. What you know, I also know; I am not inferior to you. 3. But I would speak to the Almighty, And I desire to reason with God. 4. But you forgers of lies, You are all worthless physicians. 5. Oh, that you would be silent, And it would be your wisdom! 6. Now hear my reasoning, And heed the pleadings of my lips. 7. Will you speak wickedly for God, And talk deceitfully for Him? 8. Will you show partiality for Him? Will you contend for God? 9. Will it be well when He searches you out? Or can you mock Him as one mocks a man? 10. He will surely rebuke you If you secretly show partiality. 11. Will not His excellence make you afraid, And the dread of Him fall upon you? 12. Your platitudes are proverbs of ashes, Your defenses are defenses of clay. 13. "Hold your peace with me, and let me speak, Then let come on me what may ! 14. Why do I take my flesh in my teeth, And put my life in my hands? 15. Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him. Even so, I will defend my own ways before Him. 16. He also shall be my salvation, For a hypocrite could not come before Him. 17. Listen carefully to my speech, And to my declaration with your ears. 18. See now, I have prepared my case, I know that I shall be vindicated. 19. Who is he who will contend with me? If now I hold my tongue, I perish. 20. "Only two things do not do to me, Then I will not hide myself from You: 21. Withdraw Your hand far from me, And let not the dread of You make me afraid. 22. Then call, and I will answer; Or let me speak, then You respond to me. 23. How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me know my transgression and my sin. 24. Why do You hide Your face, And regard me as Your enemy? 25. Will You frighten a leaf driven to and fro? And will You pursue dry stubble? 26. For You write bitter things against me, And make me inherit the iniquities of my youth. 27. You put my feet in the stocks, And watch closely all my paths. You set a limit for the soles of my feet. 28. "Man decays like a rotten thing, Like a garment that is moth–eaten.
23. Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said, "By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?" 24. But Jesus answered and said to them, "I also will ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things: 25. "The baptism of John––where was it from? From heaven or from men?" And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26. "But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the multitude, for all count John as a prophet." 27. So they answered Jesus and said, "We do not know." And He said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. 28. "But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go, work today in my vineyard.’ 29. "He answered and said, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he regretted it and went. 30. "Then he came to the second and said likewise. And he answered and said, ‘I go , sir,’ but he did not go. 31. "Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said to Him, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that tax collectors and harlots enter the kingdom of God before you. 32. "For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but tax collectors and harlots believed him; and when you saw it , you did not afterward relent and believe him. 33. "Hear another parable: There was a certain landowner who planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a winepress in it and built a tower. And he leased it to vinedressers and went into a far country. 34. "Now when vintage–time drew near, he sent his servants to the vinedressers, that they might receive its fruit. 35. "And the vinedressers took his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another. 36. "Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did likewise to them. 37. "Then last of all he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38. "But when the vinedressers saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’ 39. "So they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him . 40. "Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers?" 41. They said to Him, "He will destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other vinedressers who will render to him the fruits in their seasons." 42. Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD’S doing, And it is marvelous in our eyes’? 43. "Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. 44. "And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder." 45. Now when the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking of them. 46. But when they sought to lay hands on Him, they feared the multitudes, because they took Him for a prophet.
