King James Version
1. Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock; and when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that indeed the region was a place for livestock, 2. the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying, 3. "Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Shebam, Nebo, and Beon, 4. "the country which the LORD defeated before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock." 5. Therefore they said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not take us over the Jordan." 6. And Moses said to the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben: "Shall your brethren go to war while you sit here? 7. "Now why will you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD has given them? 8. "Thus your fathers did when I sent them away from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. 9. "For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, so that they did not go into the land which the LORD had given them. 10. "So the LORD’S anger was aroused on that day, and He swore an oath, saying, 11. ‘Surely none of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and above, shall see the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because they have not wholly followed Me, 12. ‘except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have wholly followed the LORD.’ 13. "So the LORD’S anger was aroused against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD was gone. 14. "And look! You have risen in your father’s place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the LORD against Israel. 15. "For if you turn away from following Him, He will once again leave them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all these people." 16. Then they came near to him and said: "We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones, 17. "but we ourselves will be armed, ready to go before the children of Israel until we have brought them to their place; and our little ones will dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18. "We will not return to our homes until every one of the children of Israel has received his inheritance. 19. "For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has fallen to us on this eastern side of the Jordan." 20. Then Moses said to them: "If you do this thing, if you arm yourselves before the LORD for the war, 21. "and all your armed men cross over the Jordan before the LORD until He has driven out His enemies from before Him, 22. "and the land is subdued before the LORD, then afterward you may return and be blameless before the LORD and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD. 23. "But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out. 24. "Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what has proceeded out of your mouth." 25. And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying: "Your servants will do as my lord commands. 26. "Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock will be there in the cities of Gilead; 27. "but your servants will cross over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, just as my lord says." 28. So Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel. 29. And Moses said to them: "If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben cross over the Jordan with you, every man armed for battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as a possession. 30. "But if they do not cross over armed with you, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan." 31. Then the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying: "As the LORD has said to your servants, so we will do. 32. "We will cross over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, but the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us on this side of the Jordan." 33. So Moses gave to the children of Gad, to the children of Reuben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land with its cities within the borders, the cities of the surrounding country. 34. And the children of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer, 35. Atroth and Shophan and Jazer and Jogbehah, 36. Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, fortified cities, and folds for sheep. 37. And the children of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kirjathaim, 38. Nebo and Baal Meon ( their names being changed) and Shibmah; and they gave other names to the cities which they built. 39. And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. 40. So Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he dwelt in it. 41. Also Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its small towns, and called them Havoth Jair. 42. Then Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah, after his own name.
1. A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. 2. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness. 3. The eyes of the LORD are in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good. 4. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit. 5. A fool despises his father’s instruction, But he who receives correction is prudent. 6. In the house of the righteous there is much treasure, But in the revenue of the wicked is trouble. 7. The lips of the wise disperse knowledge, But the heart of the fool does not do so. 8. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, But the prayer of the upright is His delight. 9. The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, But He loves him who follows righteousness. 10. Harsh discipline is for him who forsakes the way, And he who hates correction will die. 11. Hell and Destruction are before the LORD; So how much more the hearts of the sons of men. 12. A scoffer does not love one who corrects him, Nor will he go to the wise. 13. A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance, But by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. 14. The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, But the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness. 15. All the days of the afflicted are evil, But he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast. 16. Better is a little with the fear of the LORD, Than great treasure with trouble. 17. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, Than a fatted calf with hatred. 18. A wrathful man stirs up strife, But he who is slow to anger allays contention. 19. The way of the lazy man is like a hedge of thorns, But the way of the upright is a highway. 20. A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish man despises his mother. 21. Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment, But a man of understanding walks uprightly. 22. Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established. 23. A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, And a word spoken in due season, how good it is ! 24. The way of life winds upward for the wise, That he may turn away from hell below. 25. The LORD will destroy the house of the proud, But He will establish the boundary of the widow. 26. The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD, But the words of the pure are pleasant. 27. He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, But he who hates bribes will live. 28. The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, But the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil. 29. The LORD is far from the wicked, But He hears the prayer of the righteous. 30. The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, And a good report makes the bones healthy. 31. The ear that hears the rebukes of life Will abide among the wise. 32. He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, But he who heeds rebuke gets understanding. 33. The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom, And before honor is humility.
1. Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in all Achaia: 2. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4. who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ. 6. Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. 7. And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation. 8. For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. 9. Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, 10. who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us , 11. you also helping together in prayer for us, that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the gift granted to us through many. 12. For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you. 13. For we are not writing any other things to you than what you read or understand. Now I trust you will understand, even to the end 14. (as also you have understood us in part), that we are your boast as you also are ours, in the day of the Lord Jesus. 15. And in this confidence I intended to come to you before, that you might have a second benefit–– 16. to pass by way of you to Macedonia, to come again from Macedonia to you, and be helped by you on my way to Judea. 17. Therefore, when I was planning this, did I do it lightly? Or the things I plan, do I plan according to the flesh, that with me there should be Yes, Yes, and No, No? 18. But as God is faithful, our word to you was not Yes and No. 19. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us––by me, Silvanus, and Timothy––was not Yes and No, but in Him was Yes. 20. For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. 21. Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22. who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. 23. Moreover I call God as witness against my soul, that to spare you I came no more to Corinth. 24. Not that we have dominion over your faith, but are fellow workers for your joy; for by faith you stand.
