King James Version
1. Then the children of Israel, the whole congregation, came into the Wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh; and Miriam died there and was buried there. 2. Now there was no water for the congregation; so they gathered together against Moses and Aaron. 3. And the people contended with Moses and spoke, saying: "If only we had died when our brethren died before the LORD! 4. "Why have you brought up the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our animals should die here? 5. "And why have you made us come up out of Egypt, to bring us to this evil place? It is not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates; nor is there any water to drink." 6. So Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and they fell on their faces. And the glory of the LORD appeared to them. 7. Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 8. "Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals." 9. So Moses took the rod from before the LORD as He commanded him. 10. And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock; and he said to them, "Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?" 11. Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank. 12. Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them." 13. This was the water of Meribah, because the children of Israel contended with the LORD, and He was hallowed among them. 14. Now Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. "Thus says your brother Israel: ‘You know all the hardship that has befallen us, 15. ‘how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a long time, and the Egyptians afflicted us and our fathers. 16. ‘When we cried out to the LORD, He heard our voice and sent the Angel and brought us up out of Egypt; now here we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your border. 17. ‘Please let us pass through your country. We will not pass through fields or vineyards, nor will we drink water from wells; we will go along the King’s Highway; we will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.’" 18. Then Edom said to him, "You shall not pass through my land , lest I come out against you with the sword." 19. So the children of Israel said to him, "We will go by the Highway, and if I or my livestock drink any of your water, then I will pay for it; let me only pass through on foot, nothing more ." 20. Then he said, "You shall not pass through." So Edom came out against them with many men and with a strong hand. 21. Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory; so Israel turned away from him. 22. Then the children of Israel, the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor. 23. And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron in Mount Hor by the border of the land of Edom, saying: 24. "Aaron shall be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against My word at the water of Meribah. 25. "Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up to Mount Hor; 26. "and strip Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son; for Aaron shall be gathered to his people and die there." 27. So Moses did just as the LORD commanded, and they went up to Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation. 28. Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there on the top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain. 29. Now when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, all the house of Israel mourned for Aaron thirty days.
1. The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: 2. To know wisdom and instruction, To perceive the words of understanding, 3. To receive the instruction of wisdom, Justice, judgment, and equity; 4. To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion–– 5. A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel, 6. To understand a proverb and an enigma, The words of the wise and their riddles. 7. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8. My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother; 9. For they will be a graceful ornament on your head, And chains about your neck. 10. My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent. 11. If they say, "Come with us, Let us lie in wait to shed blood; Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause; 12. Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, And whole, like those who go down to the Pit; 13. We shall find all kinds of precious possessions, We shall fill our houses with spoil; 14. Cast in your lot among us, Let us all have one purse" –– 15. My son, do not walk in the way with them, Keep your foot from their path; 16. For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood. 17. Surely, in vain the net is spread In the sight of any bird; 18. But they lie in wait for their own blood, They lurk secretly for their own lives. 19. So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; It takes away the life of its owners. 20. Wisdom calls aloud outside; She raises her voice in the open squares. 21. She cries out in the chief concourses, At the openings of the gates in the city She speaks her words: 22. "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, And fools hate knowledge. 23. Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. 24. Because I have called and you refused, I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded, 25. Because you disdained all my counsel, And would have none of my rebuke, 26. I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your terror comes, 27. When your terror comes like a storm, And your destruction comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. 28. "Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me. 29. Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the LORD, 30. They would have none of my counsel And despised my every rebuke. 31. Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, And be filled to the full with their own fancies. 32. For the turning away of the simple will slay them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33. But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil."
18. Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19. What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? 20. Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. 21. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. 22. Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He? 23. All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. 24. Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well–being. 25. Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake; 26. for "the earth is the LORD’S, and all its fullness." 27. If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner , and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience’ sake. 28. But if anyone says to you, "This was offered to idols," do not eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake; for "the earth is the LORD’S, and all its fullness." 29. "Conscience, " I say, not your own, but that of the other. For why is my liberty judged by another man’s conscience? 30. But if I partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken of for the food over which I give thanks? 31. Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32. Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, 33. just as I also please all men in all things , not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
