King James Version
1. Now these are the nations which the LORD left, that He might test Israel by them, that is , all who had not known any of the wars in Canaan 2. ( this was only so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war, at least those who had not formerly known it), 3. namely , five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. 4. And they were left, that He might test Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commandments of the LORD, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. 5. Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6. And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods. 7. So the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God, and served the Baals and Asherahs. 8. Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan–Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan–Rishathaim eight years. 9. When the children of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10. The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD delivered Cushan–Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan–Rishathaim. 11. So the land had rest for forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died. 12. And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD. So the LORD strengthened Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD. 13. Then he gathered to himself the people of Ammon and Amalek, went and defeated Israel, and took possession of the City of Palms. 14. So the children of Israel served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years. 15. But when the children of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left–handed man. By him the children of Israel sent tribute to Eglon king of Moab. 16. Now Ehud made himself a dagger (it was double–edged and a cubit in length) and fastened it under his clothes on his right thigh. 17. So he brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. (Now Eglon was a very fat man.) 18. And when he had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who had carried the tribute. 19. But he himself turned back from the stone images that were at Gilgal, and said, "I have a secret message for you, O king." He said, "Keep silence!" And all who attended him went out from him. 20. And Ehud came to him (now he was sitting upstairs in his cool private chamber). Then Ehud said, "I have a message from God for you." So he arose from his seat. 21. Then Ehud reached with his left hand, took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. 22. Even the hilt went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the dagger out of his belly; and his entrails came out. 23. Then Ehud went out through the porch and shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them. 24. When he had gone out, Eglon’s servants came to look, and to their surprise, the doors of the upper room were locked. So they said, "He is probably attending to his needs in the cool chamber." 25. So they waited till they were embarrassed, and still he had not opened the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them . And there was their master, fallen dead on the floor. 26. But Ehud had escaped while they delayed, and passed beyond the stone images and escaped to Seirah. 27. And it happened, when he arrived, that he blew the trumpet in the mountains of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mountains; and he led them. 28. Then he said to them, "Follow me , for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand." So they went down after him, seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over. 29. And at that time they killed about ten thousand men of Moab, all stout men of valor; not a man escaped. 30. So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest for eighty years. 31. After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad; and he also delivered Israel.
1. "Thus says the LORD to His anointed, To Cyrus, whose right hand I have held––To subdue nations before him And loose the armor of kings, To open before him the double doors, So that the gates will not be shut: 2. ‘I will go before you And make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze And cut the bars of iron. 3. I will give you the treasures of darkness And hidden riches of secret places, That you may know that I, the LORD, Who call you by your name, Am the God of Israel. 4. For Jacob My servant’s sake, And Israel My elect, I have even called you by your name; I have named you, though you have not known Me. 5. I am the LORD, and there is no other; There is no God besides Me. I will gird you, though you have not known Me, 6. That they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting That there is none besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other; 7. I form the light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, the LORD, do all these things .’ 8. "Rain down, you heavens, from above, And let the skies pour down righteousness; Let the earth open, let them bring forth salvation, And let righteousness spring up together. I, the LORD, have created it. 9. "Woe to him who strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’ Or shall your handiwork say , ‘He has no hands’? 10. Woe to him who says to his father, ‘What are you begetting?’ Or to the woman, ‘What have you brought forth?’" 11. Thus says the LORD, The Holy One of Israel, and his Maker: "Ask Me of things to come concerning My sons; And concerning the work of My hands, you command Me. 12. I have made the earth, And created man on it. I––My hands––stretched out the heavens, And all their host I have commanded. 13. I have raised him up in righteousness, And I will direct all his ways; He shall build My city And let My exiles go free, Not for price nor reward," Says the LORD of hosts. 14. Thus says the LORD: "The labor of Egypt and merchandise of Cush And of the Sabeans, men of stature, Shall come over to you, and they shall be yours; They shall walk behind you, They shall come over in chains; And they shall bow down to you. They will make supplication to you, saying , ‘Surely God is in you, And there is no other; There is no other God.’" 15. Truly You are God, who hide Yourself, O God of Israel, the Savior! 16. They shall be ashamed And also disgraced, all of them; They shall go in confusion together, Who are makers of idols. 17. But Israel shall be saved by the LORD With an everlasting salvation; You shall not be ashamed or disgraced Forever and ever. 18. For thus says the LORD, Who created the heavens, Who is God, Who formed the earth and made it, Who has established it, Who did not create it in vain, Who formed it to be inhabited: "I am the LORD, and there is no other. 19. I have not spoken in secret, In a dark place of the earth; I did not say to the seed of Jacob, ‘Seek Me in vain’; I, the LORD, speak righteousness, I declare things that are right. 20. "Assemble yourselves and come; Draw near together, You who have escaped from the nations. They have no knowledge, Who carry the wood of their carved image, And pray to a god that cannot save. 21. Tell and bring forth your case ; Yes, let them take counsel together. Who has declared this from ancient time? Who has told it from that time? Have not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, A just God and a Savior; There is none besides Me. 22. "Look to Me, and be saved, All you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. 23. I have sworn by Myself; The word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, And shall not return, That to Me every knee shall bow, Every tongue shall take an oath. 24. He shall say, ‘Surely in the LORD I have righteousness and strength. To Him men shall come, And all shall be ashamed Who are incensed against Him. 25. In the LORD all the descendants of Israel Shall be justified, and shall glory.’"
1. Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: 2. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3. I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4. always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, 5. for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, 6. being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; 7. just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace. 8. For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ. 9. And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10. that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11. being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. 12. But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, 13. so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; 14. and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. 15. Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from good will: 16. The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains; 17. but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. 18. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice. 19. For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20. according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. 21. For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22. But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. 23. For I am hard pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. 24. Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. 25. And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith, 26. that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again. 27. Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel, 28. and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that from God. 29. For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, 30. having the same conflict which you saw in me and now hear is in me.
