King James Version
40. Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine. 41. So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him. 42. And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was only a youth, ruddy and good–looking. 43. So the Philistine said to David, " Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44. And the Philistine said to David, "Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!" 45. Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46. "This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47. "Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’S, and He will give you into our hands." 48. So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hastened and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49. Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. 50. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David. 51. Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. 52. Now the men of Israel and Judah arose and shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as the entrance of the valley and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell along the road to Shaaraim, even as far as Gath and Ekron. 53. Then the children of Israel returned from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their tents. 54. And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent. 55. When Saul saw David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, "Abner, whose son is this youth?" And Abner said, "As your soul lives, O king, I do not know." 56. So the king said, "Inquire whose son this young man is ." 57. Then, as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58. And Saul said to him, "Whose son are you, young man?" So David answered, " I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite."
1. The word of the LORD also came to me, saying, 2. "You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters in this place." 3. For thus says the LORD concerning the sons and daughters who are born in this place, and concerning their mothers who bore them and their fathers who begot them in this land: 4. "They shall die gruesome deaths; they shall not be lamented nor shall they be buried, but they shall be like refuse on the face of the earth. They shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, and their corpses shall be meat for the birds of heaven and for the beasts of the earth." 5. For thus says the LORD: "Do not enter the house of mourning, nor go to lament or bemoan them; for I have taken away My peace from this people," says the LORD, "lovingkindness and mercies. 6. "Both the great and the small shall die in this land. They shall not be buried; neither shall men lament for them, cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them. 7. "Nor shall men break bread in mourning for them, to comfort them for the dead; nor shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or their mother. 8. "Also you shall not go into the house of feasting to sit with them, to eat and drink." 9. For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: "Behold, I will cause to cease from this place, before your eyes and in your days, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride. 10. "And it shall be, when you show this people all these words, and they say to you, ‘Why has the LORD pronounced all this great disaster against us? Or what is our iniquity? Or what is our sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?’ 11. "then you shall say to them, ‘Because your fathers have forsaken Me,’ says the LORD; ‘they have walked after other gods and have served them and worshiped them, and have forsaken Me and not kept My law. 12. ‘And you have done worse than your fathers, for behold, each one follows the dictates of his own evil heart, so that no one listens to Me. 13. ‘Therefore I will cast you out of this land into a land that you do not know, neither you nor your fathers; and there you shall serve other gods day and night, where I will not show you favor.’ 14. "Therefore behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "that it shall no more be said, ‘The LORD lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt,’ 15. "but, ‘The LORD lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north and from all the lands where He had driven them.’ For I will bring them back into their land which I gave to their fathers. 16. "Behold, I will send for many fishermen," says the LORD, "and they shall fish them; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks. 17. "For My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from My face, nor is their iniquity hidden from My eyes. 18. "And first I will repay double for their iniquity and their sin, because they have defiled My land; they have filled My inheritance with the carcasses of their detestable and abominable idols." 19. O LORD, my strength and my fortress, My refuge in the day of affliction, The Gentiles shall come to You From the ends of the earth and say, "Surely our fathers have inherited lies, Worthlessness and unprofitable things ." 20. Will a man make gods for himself, Which are not gods? 21. "Therefore behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know My hand and My might; And they shall know that My name is the LORD.
17. Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18. Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. 19. And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst before Jesus. 20. When He saw their faith, He said to him, "Man, your sins are forgiven you." 21. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, "Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?" 22. But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, "Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23. "Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’? 24. "But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins" ––He said to the man who was paralyzed, "I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house." 25. Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. 26. And they were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen strange things today!" 27. After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, "Follow Me." 28. So he left all, rose up, and followed Him. 29. Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them. 30. And their scribes and the Pharisees complained against His disciples, saying, "Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" 31. Jesus answered and said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32. "I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance." 33. Then they said to Him, "Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?" 34. And He said to them, "Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35. "But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days." 36. Then He spoke a parable to them: "No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37. "And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38. "But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. 39. "And no one, having drunk old wine , immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’"
