King James Version
1. Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2. Saul took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father’s house anymore. 3. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 4. And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt. 5. So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved wisely. And Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants. 6. Now it had happened as they were coming home , when David was returning from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women had come out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy, and with musical instruments. 7. So the women sang as they danced, and said: "Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands." 8. Then Saul was very angry, and the saying displeased him; and he said, "They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed only thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?" 9. So Saul eyed David from that day forward. 10. And it happened on the next day that the distressing spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied inside the house. So David played music with his hand, as at other times; but there was a spear in Saul’s hand. 11. And Saul cast the spear, for he said, "I will pin David to the wall!" But David escaped his presence twice. 12. Now Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, but had departed from Saul. 13. Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people. 14. And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the LORD was with him. 15. Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved very wisely, he was afraid of him. 16. But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them. 17. Then Saul said to David, "Here is my older daughter Merab; I will give her to you as a wife. Only be valiant for me, and fight the LORD’S battles." For Saul thought, "Let my hand not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him." 18. So David said to Saul, "Who am I, and what is my life or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son–in–law to the king?" 19. But it happened at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David, that she was given to Adriel the Meholathite as a wife. 20. Now Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved David. And they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. 21. So Saul said, "I will give her to him, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him." Therefore Saul said to David a second time, "You shall be my son–in–law today." 22. And Saul commanded his servants, "Communicate with David secretly, and say, ‘Look, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. Now therefore, become the king’s son–in–law.’" 23. So Saul’s servants spoke those words in the hearing of David. And David said, "Does it seem to you a light thing to be a king’s son–in–law, seeing I am a poor and lightly esteemed man?" 24. And the servants of Saul told him, saying, "In this manner David spoke." 25. Then Saul said, "Thus you shall say to David: ‘The king does not desire any dowry but one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to take vengeance on the king’s enemies.’" But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. 26. So when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to become the king’s son–in–law. Now the days had not expired; 27. therefore David arose and went, he and his men, and killed two hundred men of the Philistines. And David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full count to the king, that he might become the king’s son–in–law. Then Saul gave him Michal his daughter as a wife. 28. Thus Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him; 29. and Saul was still more afraid of David. So Saul became David’s enemy continually. 30. Then the princes of the Philistines went out to war . And so it was, whenever they went out, that David behaved more wisely than all the servants of Saul, so that his name became highly esteemed.
1. "The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron; With the point of a diamond it is engraved On the tablet of their heart, And on the horns of your altars, 2. While their children remember Their altars and their wooden images By the green trees on the high hills. 3. O My mountain in the field, I will give as plunder your wealth, all your treasures, And your high places of sin within all your borders. 4. And you, even yourself, Shall let go of your heritage which I gave you; And I will cause you to serve your enemies In the land which you do not know; For you have kindled a fire in My anger which shall burn forever." 5. Thus says the LORD: "Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, Whose heart departs from the LORD. 6. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, And shall not see when good comes, But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, In a salt land which is not inhabited. 7. "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, And whose hope is the LORD. 8. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit. 9. "The heart is deceitful above all things , And desperately wicked; Who can know it? 10. I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings. 11. " As a partridge that broods but does not hatch, So is he who gets riches, but not by right; It will leave him in the midst of his days, And at his end he will be a fool." 12. A glorious high throne from the beginning Is the place of our sanctuary. 13. O LORD, the hope of Israel, All who forsake You shall be ashamed. "Those who depart from Me Shall be written in the earth, Because they have forsaken the LORD, The fountain of living waters." 14. Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; Save me, and I shall be saved, For You are my praise. 15. Indeed they say to me, "Where is the word of the LORD? Let it come now!" 16. As for me, I have not hurried away from being a shepherd who follows You, Nor have I desired the woeful day; You know what came out of my lips; It was right there before You. 17. Do not be a terror to me; You are my hope in the day of doom. 18. Let them be ashamed who persecute me, But do not let me be put to shame; Let them be dismayed, But do not let me be dismayed. Bring on them the day of doom, And destroy them with double destruction! 19. Thus the LORD said to me: "Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, by which the kings of Judah come in and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem; 20. "and say to them, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, you kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, who enter by these gates. 21. ‘Thus says the LORD: "Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the Sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem; 22. "nor carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath day, nor do any work, but hallow the Sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers. 23. "But they did not obey nor incline their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear nor receive instruction. 24. "And it shall be, if you heed Me carefully," says the LORD, "to bring no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but hallow the Sabbath day, to do no work in it, 25. "then shall enter the gates of this city kings and princes sitting on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes, accompanied by the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city shall remain forever. 26. "And they shall come from the cities of Judah and from the places around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin and from the lowland, from the mountains and from the South, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and incense, bringing sacrifices of praise to the house of the LORD. 27. "But if you will not heed Me to hallow the Sabbath day, such as not carrying a burden when entering the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched."’"
1. Now it happened on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grainfields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them , rubbing them in their hands. 2. And some of the Pharisees said to them, "Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?" 3. But Jesus answering them said, "Have you not even read this, what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4. "how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?" 5. And He said to them, "The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath." 6. Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7. So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him. 8. But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, "Arise and stand here." And he arose and stood. 9. Then Jesus said to them, "I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy?" 10. And when He had looked around at them all, He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he did so, and his hand was restored as whole as the other. 11. But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus. 12. Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. 13. And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself ; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles: 14. Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15. Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; 16. Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor. 17. And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases, 18. as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed. 19. And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all. 20. Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said: "Blessed are you poor, For yours is the kingdom of God. 21. Blessed are you who hunger now, For you shall be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, For you shall laugh. 22. Blessed are you when men hate you, And when they exclude you, And revile you , and cast out your name as evil, For the Son of Man’s sake. 23. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy! For indeed your reward is great in heaven, For in like manner their fathers did to the prophets. 24. "But woe to you who are rich, For you have received your consolation. 25. Woe to you who are full, For you shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, For you shall mourn and weep. 26. Woe to you when all men speak well of you, For so did their fathers to the false prophets.
