2SAM 8
YER 35
LUK 14:25-35

2SAM 8

1.   After this it came to pass that David attacked the Philistines and subdued them. And David took Metheg Ammah from the hand of the Philistines. 2.   Then he defeated Moab. Forcing them down to the ground, he measured them off with a line. With two lines he measured off those to be put to death, and with one full line those to be kept alive. So the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought tribute. 3.   David also defeated Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his territory at the River Euphrates. 4.   David took from him one thousand chariots , seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. Also David hamstrung all the chariot horses, except that he spared enough of them for one hundred chariots. 5.   When the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David killed twenty–two thousand of the Syrians. 6.   Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became David’s servants, and brought tribute. The LORD preserved David wherever he went. 7.   And David took the shields of gold that had belonged to the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. 8.   Also from Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took a large amount of bronze. 9.   When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had defeated all the army of Hadadezer, 10.   then Toi sent Joram his son to King David, to greet him and bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him (for Hadadezer had been at war with Toi); and Joram brought with him articles of silver, articles of gold, and articles of bronze. 11.   King David also dedicated these to the LORD, along with the silver and gold that he had dedicated from all the nations which he had subdued–– 12.   from Syria, from Moab, from the people of Ammon, from the Philistines, from Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah. 13.   And David made himself a name when he returned from killing eighteen thousand Syrians in the Valley of Salt. 14.   He also put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, and all the Edomites became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David wherever he went. 15.   So David reigned over all Israel; and David administered judgment and justice to all his people. 16.   Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; 17.   Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were the priests; Seraiah was the scribe; 18.   Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief ministers.

YER 35

1.   The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, 2.   "Go to the house of the Rechabites, speak to them, and bring them into the house of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink." 3.   Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, his brothers and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites, 4.   and I brought them into the house of the LORD, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door. 5.   Then I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites bowls full of wine, and cups; and I said to them, "Drink wine." 6.   But they said, "We will drink no wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall drink no wine, you nor your sons, forever. 7.   ‘You shall not build a house, sow seed, plant a vineyard, nor have any of these ; but all your days you shall dwell in tents, that you may live many days in the land where you are sojourners.’ 8.   "Thus we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, or our daughters, 9.   "nor to build ourselves houses to dwell in; nor do we have vineyard, field, or seed. 10.   "But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us. 11.   "But it came to pass, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, ‘Come, let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans and for fear of the army of the Syrians.’ So we dwell at Jerusalem." 12.   Then came the word of the LORD to Jeremiah, saying, 13.   "Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, "Will you not receive instruction to obey My words?" says the LORD. 14.   "The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, which he commanded his sons, not to drink wine, are performed; for to this day they drink none, and obey their father’s commandment. But although I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, you did not obey Me. 15.   "I have also sent to you all My servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them , saying, ‘Turn now everyone from his evil way, amend your doings, and do not go after other gods to serve them; then you will dwell in the land which I have given you and your fathers.’ But you have not inclined your ear, nor obeyed Me. 16.   "Surely the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them, but this people has not obeyed Me."’ 17.   "Therefore thus says the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will bring on Judah and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the doom that I have pronounced against them; because I have spoken to them but they have not heard, and I have called to them but they have not answered.’" 18.   And Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, "Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts and done according to all that he commanded you, 19.   ‘therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: "Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not lack a man to stand before Me forever."’"

LUK 14 25-35

25.   Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, 26.   "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27.   "And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28.   "For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it –– 29.   "lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30.   "saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31.   "Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32.   "Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. 33.   "So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple. 34.   "Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? 35.   "It is neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!"
