King James Version
1. Sarah lived one hundred and twenty–seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. 2. So Sarah died in Kirjath Arba (that is , Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. 3. Then Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, 4. "I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight." 5. And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him, 6. "Hear us, my lord: You are a mighty prince among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our burial places. None of us will withhold from you his burial place, that you may bury your dead." 7. Then Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land, the sons of Heth. 8. And he spoke with them, saying, "If it is your wish that I bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and meet with Ephron the son of Zohar for me, 9. "that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he has, which is at the end of his field. Let him give it to me at the full price, as property for a burial place among you." 10. Now Ephron dwelt among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the presence of the sons of Heth, all who entered at the gate of his city, saying, 11. "No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field and the cave that is in it; I give it to you in the presence of the sons of my people. I give it to you. Bury your dead!" 12. Then Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land; 13. and he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, "If you will give it , please hear me. I will give you money for the field; take it from me and I will bury my dead there." 14. And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, 15. "My lord, listen to me; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver. What is that between you and me? So bury your dead." 16. And Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed out the silver for Ephron which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, currency of the merchants. 17. So the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field and the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, which were within all the surrounding borders, were deeded 18. to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city. 19. And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre (that is , Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 20. So the field and the cave that is in it were deeded to Abraham by the sons of Heth as property for a burial place.
1. Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel. 2. So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month. 3. Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. 4. So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6. And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. Then all the people answered, "Amen, Amen!" while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. 7. Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law; and the people stood in their place. 8. So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading. 9. And Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, "This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn nor weep." For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law. 10. Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our LORD. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." 11. So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, "Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved." 12. And all the people went their way to eat and drink, to send portions and rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that were declared to them. 13. Now on the second day the heads of the fathers’ houses of all the people, with the priests and Levites, were gathered to Ezra the scribe, in order to understand the words of the Law. 14. And they found written in the Law, which the LORD had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month, 15. and that they should announce and proclaim in all their cities and in Jerusalem, saying, "Go out to the mountain, and bring olive branches, branches of oil trees, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of leafy trees, to make booths, as it is written." 16. Then the people went out and brought them and made themselves booths, each one on the roof of his house, or in their courtyards or the courts of the house of God, and in the open square of the Water Gate and in the open square of the Gate of Ephraim. 17. So the whole assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and sat under the booths; for since the days of Joshua the son of Nun until that day the children of Israel had not done so. And there was very great gladness. 18. Also day by day, from the first day until the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day there was a sacred assembly, according to the prescribed manner.
16. "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. 17. "But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues. 18. "You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19. "But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20. "for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. 21. "Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 22. "And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. 23. "When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. 24. "A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25. "It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! 26. "Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. 27. "Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. 28. "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29. "Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. 30. "But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31. "Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32. "Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33. "But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven. 34. "Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35. "For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter–in–law against her mother–in–law’; 36. "and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37. "He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38. "And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39. "He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. 40. "He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. 41. "He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. 42. "And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward."
