UL 2 26-37

26.   "And I sent messengers from the Wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying, 27.   ‘Let me pass through your land; I will keep strictly to the road, and I will turn neither to the right nor to the left. 28.   ‘You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink; only let me pass through on foot, 29.   ‘just as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land which the LORD our God is giving us.’ 30.   "But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as it is this day. 31.   "And the LORD said to me, ‘See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to possess it , that you may inherit his land.’ 32.   "Then Sihon and all his people came out against us to fight at Jahaz. 33.   "And the LORD our God delivered him over to us; so we defeated him, his sons, and all his people. 34.   "We took all his cities at that time, and we utterly destroyed the men, women, and little ones of every city; we left none remaining. 35.   "We took only the livestock as plunder for ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we took. 36.   "From Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and from the city that is in the ravine, as far as Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us; the LORD our God delivered all to us. 37.   "Only you did not go near the land of the people of Ammon––anywhere along the River Jabbok, or to the cities of the mountains, or wherever the LORD our God had forbidden us.

UL 3 1-21

1.   "Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan; and Og king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. 2.   "And the LORD said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have delivered him and all his people and his land into your hand; you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.’ 3.   "So the LORD our God also delivered into our hands Og king of Bashan, with all his people, and we attacked him until he had no survivors remaining. 4.   "And we took all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we did not take from them: sixty cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5.   "All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many rural towns. 6.   "And we utterly destroyed them, as we did to Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children of every city. 7.   "But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as booty for ourselves. 8.   "And at that time we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were on this side of the Jordan, from the River Arnon to Mount Hermon 9.   ‘(the Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir), 10.   "all the cities of the plain, all Gilead, and all Bashan, as far as Salcah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11.   "For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the giants. Indeed his bedstead was an iron bedstead. ( Is it not in Rabbah of the people of Ammon?) Nine cubits is its length and four cubits its width, according to the standard cubit. 12.   "And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the River Arnon, and half the mountains of Gilead and its cities, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites. 13.   "The rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh. (All the region of Argob, with all Bashan, was called the land of the giants. 14.   "Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and called Bashan after his own name, Havoth Jair, to this day.) 15.   "Also I gave Gilead to Machir. 16.   "And to the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave from Gilead as far as the River Arnon, the middle of the river as the border, as far as the River Jabbok, the border of the people of Ammon; 17.   "the plain also, with the Jordan as the border, from Chinnereth as far as the east side of the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea), below the slopes of Pisgah. 18.   "Then I commanded you at that time, saying: ‘The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All you men of valor shall cross over armed before your brethren, the children of Israel. 19.   ‘But your wives, your little ones, and your livestock (I know that you have much livestock) shall stay in your cities which I have given you, 20.   ‘until the LORD has given rest to your brethren as to you, and they also possess the land which the LORD your God is giving them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession which I have given you.’ 21.   "And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, ‘Your eyes have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings; so will the LORD do to all the kingdoms through which you pass.

AMS 25

1.   These also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied: 2.   It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter. 3.   As the heavens for height and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable. 4.   Take away the dross from silver, And it will go to the silversmith for jewelry. 5.   Take away the wicked from before the king, And his throne will be established in righteousness. 6.   Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king, And do not stand in the place of the great; 7.   For it is better that he say to you, "Come up here," Than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom your eyes have seen. 8.   Do not go hastily to court; For what will you do in the end, When your neighbor has put you to shame? 9.   Debate your case with your neighbor, And do not disclose the secret to another; 10.   Lest he who hears it expose your shame, And your reputation be ruined. 11.   A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver. 12.   Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold Is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear. 13.   Like the cold of snow in time of harvest Is a faithful messenger to those who send him, For he refreshes the soul of his masters. 14.   Whoever falsely boasts of giving Is like clouds and wind without rain. 15.   By long forbearance a ruler is persuaded, And a gentle tongue breaks a bone. 16.   Have you found honey? Eat only as much as you need, Lest you be filled with it and vomit. 17.   Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house, Lest he become weary of you and hate you. 18.   A man who bears false witness against his neighbor Is like a club, a sword, and a sharp arrow. 19.   Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble Is like a bad tooth and a foot out of joint. 20.   Like one who takes away a garment in cold weather, And like vinegar on soda, Is one who sings songs to a heavy heart. 21.   If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; 22.   For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, And the LORD will reward you. 23.   The north wind brings forth rain, And a backbiting tongue an angry countenance. 24.   It is better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, Than in a house shared with a contentious woman. 25.   As cold water to a weary soul, So is good news from a far country. 26.   A righteous man who falters before the wicked Is like a murky spring and a polluted well. 27.   It is not good to eat much honey; So to seek one’s own glory is not glory. 28.   Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.

1.   Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: 2.   that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality. 3.   For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing, 4.   imploring us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. 5.   And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God. 6.   So we urged Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also complete this grace in you as well. 7.   But as you abound in everything––in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us–– see that you abound in this grace also. 8.   I speak not by commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence of others. 9.   For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich. 10.   And in this I give advice: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and were desiring to do a year ago; 11.   but now you also must complete the doing of it ; that as there was a readiness to desire it , so there also may be a completion out of what you have. 12.   For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have. 13.   For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened; 14.   but by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may supply their lack, that their abundance also may supply your lack––that there may be equality. 15.   As it is written, "He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack." 16.   But thanks be to God who puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus. 17.   For he not only accepted the exhortation, but being more diligent, he went to you of his own accord. 18.   And we have sent with him the brother whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches, 19.   and not only that , but who was also chosen by the churches to travel with us with this gift, which is administered by us to the glory of the Lord Himself and to show your ready mind, 20.   avoiding this: that anyone should blame us in this lavish gift which is administered by us–– 21.   providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. 22.   And we have sent with them our brother whom we have often proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, because of the great confidence which we have in you. 23.   If anyone inquires about Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker concerning you. Or if our brethren are inquired about, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ. 24.   Therefore show to them, and before the churches the proof of your love and of our boasting on your behalf.
