King James Version
1. Now the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, "Is David not hiding in the hill of Hachilah, opposite Jeshimon?" 2. Then Saul arose and went down to the Wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the Wilderness of Ziph. 3. And Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, which is opposite Jeshimon, by the road. But David stayed in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness. 4. David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul had indeed come. 5. So David arose and came to the place where Saul had encamped. And David saw the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the commander of his army. Now Saul lay within the camp, with the people encamped all around him. 6. Then David answered, and said to Ahimelech the Hittite and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother of Joab, saying, "Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp?" And Abishai said, "I will go down with you." 7. So David and Abishai came to the people by night; and there Saul lay sleeping within the camp, with his spear stuck in the ground by his head. And Abner and the people lay all around him. 8. Then Abishai said to David, "God has delivered your enemy into your hand this day. Now therefore, please, let me strike him at once with the spear, right to the earth; and I will not have to strike him a second time!" 9. And David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy him; for who can stretch out his hand against the LORD’S anointed, and be guiltless?" 10. David said furthermore, " As the LORD lives, the LORD shall strike him, or his day shall come to die, or he shall go out to battle and perish. 11. "The LORD forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the LORD’S anointed. But please, take now the spear and the jug of water that are by his head, and let us go." 12. So David took the spear and the jug of water by Saul’s head, and they got away; and no man saw it or knew it or awoke. For they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from the LORD had fallen on them. 13. Now David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of a hill afar off, a great distance being between them. 14. And David called out to the people and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, "Do you not answer, Abner?" Then Abner answered and said, "Who are you, calling out to the king?" 15. So David said to Abner, " Are you not a man? And who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not guarded your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy your lord the king. 16. "This thing that you have done is not good. As the LORD lives, you deserve to die, because you have not guarded your master, the LORD’S anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is , and the jug of water that was by his head." 17. Then Saul knew David’s voice, and said, " Is that your voice, my son David?" And David said, " It is my voice, my lord, O king." 18. And he said, "Why does my lord thus pursue his servant? For what have I done, or what evil is in my hand? 19. "Now therefore, please, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant: If the LORD has stirred you up against me, let Him accept an offering. But if it is the children of men, may they be cursed before the LORD, for they have driven me out this day from sharing in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’ 20. "So now, do not let my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD. For the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains." 21. Then Saul said, "I have sinned. Return, my son David. For I will harm you no more, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Indeed I have played the fool and erred exceedingly." 22. And David answered and said, "Here is the king’s spear. Let one of the young men come over and get it. 23. "May the LORD repay every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness; for the LORD delivered you into my hand today, but I would not stretch out my hand against the LORD’S anointed. 24. "And indeed, as your life was valued much this day in my eyes, so let my life be valued much in the eyes of the LORD, and let Him deliver me out of all tribulation." 25. Then Saul said to David, " May you be blessed, my son David! You shall both do great things and also still prevail." So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.
1. And David said in his heart, "Now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape to the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me anymore in any part of Israel. So I shall escape out of his hand." 2. Then David arose and went over with the six hundred men who were with him to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath. 3. So David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, each man with his household, and David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s widow. 4. And it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath; so he sought him no more. 5. Then David said to Achish, "If I have now found favor in your eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there. For why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?" 6. So Achish gave him Ziklag that day. Therefore Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day. 7. Now the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was one full year and four months. 8. And David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the Amalekites. For those nations were the inhabitants of the land from of old, as you go to Shur, even as far as the land of Egypt. 9. Whenever David attacked the land, he left neither man nor woman alive, but took away the sheep, the oxen, the donkeys, the camels, and the apparel, and returned and came to Achish. 10. Then Achish would say, "Where have you made a raid today?" And David would say, "Against the southern area of Judah, or against the southern area of the Jerahmeelites, or against the southern area of the Kenites." 11. David would save neither man nor woman alive, to bring news to Gath, saying, "Lest they should inform on us, saying, ‘Thus David did.’" And thus was his behavior all the time he dwelt in the country of the Philistines. 12. So Achish believed David, saying, "He has made his people Israel utterly abhor him; therefore he will be my servant forever."
15. For thus says the LORD God of Israel to me: "Take this wine cup of fury from My hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send you, to drink it. 16. "And they will drink and stagger and go mad because of the sword that I will send among them." 17. Then I took the cup from the LORD’S hand, and made all the nations drink, to whom the LORD had sent me: 18. Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and its princes, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, a hissing, and a curse, as it is this day; 19. Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his princes, and all his people; 20. all the mixed multitude, all the kings of the land of Uz, all the kings of the land of the Philistines (namely, Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod); 21. Edom, Moab, and the people of Ammon; 22. all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coastlands which are across the sea; 23. Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who are in the farthest corners; 24. all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the mixed multitude who dwell in the desert; 25. all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes; 26. all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another; and all the kingdoms of the world which are on the face of the earth. Also the king of Sheshach shall drink after them. 27. "Therefore you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: "Drink, be drunk, and vomit! Fall and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you."’ 28. "And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: "You shall certainly drink! 29. "For behold, I begin to bring calamity on the city which is called by My name, and should you be utterly unpunished? You shall not be unpunished, for I will call for a sword on all the inhabitants of the earth," says the LORD of hosts.’ 30. "Therefore prophesy against them all these words, and say to them: ‘The LORD will roar from on high, And utter His voice from His holy habitation; He will roar mightily against His fold. He will give a shout, as those who tread the grapes , Against all the inhabitants of the earth. 31. A noise will come to the ends of the earth––For the LORD has a controversy with the nations; He will plead His case with all flesh. He will give those who are wicked to the sword,’ says the LORD." 32. Thus says the LORD of hosts: "Behold, disaster shall go forth From nation to nation, And a great whirlwind shall be raised up From the farthest parts of the earth. 33. "And at that day the slain of the LORD shall be from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall become refuse on the ground. 34. "Wail, shepherds, and cry! Roll about in the ashes , You leaders of the flock! For the days of your slaughter and your dispersions are fulfilled; You shall fall like a precious vessel. 35. And the shepherds will have no way to flee, Nor the leaders of the flock to escape. 36. A voice of the cry of the shepherds, And a wailing of the leaders to the flock will be heard . For the LORD has plundered their pasture, 37. And the peaceful dwellings are cut down Because of the fierce anger of the LORD. 38. He has left His lair like the lion; For their land is desolate Because of the fierceness of the Oppressor, And because of His fierce anger."
37. Now it happened on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a great multitude met Him. 38. Suddenly a man from the multitude cried out, saying, "Teacher, I implore You, look on my son, for he is my only child. 39. "And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him so that he foams at the mouth , and it departs from him with great difficulty, bruising him. 40. "So I implored Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not." 41. Then Jesus answered and said, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here." 42. And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him . Then Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the child, and gave him back to his father. 43. And they were all amazed at the majesty of God. But while everyone marveled at all the things which Jesus did, He said to His disciples, 44. "Let these words sink down into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men." 45. But they did not understand this saying, and it was hidden from them so that they did not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying. 46. Then a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest. 47. And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a little child and set him by Him, 48. and said to them, "Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all will be great." 49. Now John answered and said, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us." 50. But Jesus said to him, "Do not forbid him , for he who is not against us is on our side." 51. Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, 52. and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. 53. But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. 54. And when His disciples James and John saw this , they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?" 55. But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. 56. "For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them ." And they went to another village. 57. Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, "Lord, I will follow You wherever You go." 58. And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." 59. Then He said to another, "Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." 60. Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God." 61. And another also said, "Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house." 62. But Jesus said to him, "No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."
