King James Version
1. Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag, 2. on the third day, behold, it happened that a man came from Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head. So it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the ground and prostrated himself. 3. And David said to him, "Where have you come from?" So he said to him, "I have escaped from the camp of Israel." 4. Then David said to him, "How did the matter go? Please tell me." And he answered, "The people have fled from the battle, many of the people are fallen and dead, and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also." 5. So David said to the young man who told him, "How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?" 6. Then the young man who told him said, "As I happened by chance to be on Mount Gilboa, there was Saul, leaning on his spear; and indeed the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. 7. "Now when he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’ 8. "And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ So I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’ 9. "He said to me again, ‘Please stand over me and kill me, for anguish has come upon me, but my life still remains in me.’ 10. "So I stood over him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord." 11. Therefore David took hold of his own clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. 12. And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, for the people of the LORD and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. 13. Then David said to the young man who told him, "Where are you from?" And he answered, "I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite." 14. So David said to him, "How was it you were not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy the LORD’S anointed?" 15. Then David called one of the young men and said, "Go near, and execute him!" And he struck him so that he died. 16. So David said to him, "Your blood is on your own head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the LORD’S anointed.’" 17. Then David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son, 18. and he told them to teach the children of Judah the Song of the Bow; indeed it is written in the Book of Jasher: 19. "The beauty of Israel is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen! 20. Tell it not in Gath, Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon––Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. 21. "O mountains of Gilboa, Let there be no dew nor rain upon you, Nor fields of offerings. For the shield of the mighty is cast away there! The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil. 22. From the blood of the slain, From the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan did not turn back, And the sword of Saul did not return empty. 23. "Saul and Jonathan were beloved and pleasant in their lives, And in their death they were not divided; They were swifter than eagles, They were stronger than lions. 24. "O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, Who clothed you in scarlet, with luxury; Who put ornaments of gold on your apparel. 25. "How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan was slain in your high places. 26. I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; You have been very pleasant to me; Your love to me was wonderful, Surpassing the love of women. 27. "How the mighty have fallen, And the weapons of war perished!"
1. Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the remainder of the elders who were carried away captive––to the priests, the prophets, and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon. 2. (This happened after Jeconiah the king, the queen mother, the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the smiths had departed from Jerusalem.) 3. The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, saying, 4. Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all who were carried away captive, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5. Build houses and dwell in them ; plant gardens and eat their fruit. 6. Take wives and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may bear sons and daughters––that you may be increased there, and not diminished. 7. And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace. 8. For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed. 9. For they prophesy falsely to you in My name; I have not sent them, says the LORD. 10. For thus says the LORD: After seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, and cause you to return to this place. 11. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13. And you will seek Me and find Me , when you search for Me with all your heart. 14. I will be found by you, says the LORD, and I will bring you back from your captivity; I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you, says the LORD, and I will bring you to the place from which I cause you to be carried away captive. 15. Because you have said, "The LORD has raised up prophets for us in Babylon" –– 16. therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king who sits on the throne of David, concerning all the people who dwell in this city, and concerning your brethren who have not gone out with you into captivity–– 17. thus says the LORD of hosts: Behold, I will send on them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like rotten figs that cannot be eaten, they are so bad. 18. And I will pursue them with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence; and I will deliver them to trouble among all the kingdoms of the earth––to be a curse, an astonishment, a hissing, and a reproach among all the nations where I have driven them, 19. because they have not heeded My words, says the LORD, which I sent to them by My servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them ; neither would you heed, says the LORD. 20. Therefore hear the word of the LORD, all you of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon. 21. Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie to you in My name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall slay them before your eyes. 22. And because of them a curse shall be taken up by all the captivity of Judah who are in Babylon, saying, "The LORD make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire"; 23. because they have done disgraceful things in Israel, have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and have spoken lying words in My name, which I have not commanded them. Indeed I know, and am a witness, says the LORD. 24. You shall also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying, 25. Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying: You have sent letters in your name to all the people who are at Jerusalem, to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying, 26. "The LORD has made you priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, so that there should be officers in the house of the LORD over every man who is demented and considers himself a prophet, that you should put him in prison and in the stocks. 27. Now therefore, why have you not reproved Jeremiah of Anathoth who makes himself a prophet to you? 28. For he has sent to us in Babylon, saying, ‘This captivity is long; build houses and dwell in them , and plant gardens and eat their fruit.’" 29. Now Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the hearing of Jeremiah the prophet. 30. Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying: 31. Send to all those in captivity, saying, Thus says the LORD concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, and I have not sent him, and he has caused you to trust in a lie–– 32. therefore thus says the LORD: Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his family: he shall not have anyone to dwell among this people, nor shall he see the good that I will do for My people, says the LORD, because he has taught rebellion against the LORD.
29. And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say, "This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 30. "For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. 31. "The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here. 32. "The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. 33. "No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light. 34. "The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35. "Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. 36. "If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light." 37. And as He spoke, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and sat down to eat. 38. When the Pharisee saw it , he marveled that He had not first washed before dinner. 39. Then the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. 40. "Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? 41. "But rather give alms of such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you. 42. "But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 43. "Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them ." 45. Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, "Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also." 46. And He said, "Woe to you also, lawyers! For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47. "Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48. "In fact, you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. 49. "Therefore the wisdom of God also said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’ 50. "that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, 51. "from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation. 52. "Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered." 53. And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross–examine Him about many things, 54. lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, that they might accuse Him.
