King James Version
1. Now it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom and had strengthened himself, that he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel along with him. 2. And it happened in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had transgressed against the LORD, 3. with twelve hundred chariots, sixty thousand horsemen, and people without number who came with him out of Egypt––the Lubim and the Sukkiim and the Ethiopians. 4. And he took the fortified cities of Judah and came to Jerusalem. 5. Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the leaders of Judah, who were gathered together in Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, "Thus says the LORD: ‘You have forsaken Me, and therefore I also have left you in the hand of Shishak.’" 6. So the leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, "The LORD is righteous." 7. Now when the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, "They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance. My wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. 8. "Nevertheless they will be his servants, that they may distinguish My service from the service of the kingdoms of the nations." 9. So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king’s house; he took everything. He also carried away the gold shields which Solomon had made. 10. Then King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place, and committed them to the hands of the captains of the guard, who guarded the doorway of the king’s house. 11. And whenever the king entered the house of the LORD, the guard would go and bring them out; then they would take them back into the guardroom. 12. When he humbled himself, the wrath of the LORD turned from him, so as not to destroy him completely; and things also went well in Judah. 13. Thus Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem and reigned. Now Rehoboam was forty–one years old when he became king; and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put His name there. His mother’s name was Naamah, an Ammonitess. 14. And he did evil, because he did not prepare his heart to seek the LORD. 15. The acts of Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written in the book of Shemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all their days. 16. So Rehoboam rested with his fathers, and was buried in the City of David. Then Abijah his son reigned in his place.
1. In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king over Judah. 2. He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. 3. Abijah set the battle in order with an army of valiant warriors, four hundred thousand choice men. Jeroboam also drew up in battle formation against him with eight hundred thousand choice men, mighty men of valor. 4. Then Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim, which is in the mountains of Ephraim, and said, "Hear me, Jeroboam and all Israel: 5. "Should you not know that the LORD God of Israel gave the dominion over Israel to David forever, to him and his sons, by a covenant of salt? 6. "Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord. 7. "Then worthless rogues gathered to him, and strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and inexperienced and could not withstand them. 8. "And now you think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD, which is in the hand of the sons of David; and you are a great multitude, and with you are the gold calves which Jeroboam made for you as gods. 9. "Have you not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made for yourselves priests, like the peoples of other lands, so that whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams may be a priest of things that are not gods? 10. "But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken Him; and the priests who minister to the LORD are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites attend to their duties. 11. "And they burn to the LORD every morning and every evening burnt sacrifices and sweet incense; they also set the showbread in order on the pure gold table, and the lampstand of gold with its lamps to burn every evening; for we keep the command of the LORD our God, but you have forsaken Him. 12. "Now look, God Himself is with us as our head, and His priests with sounding trumpets to sound the alarm against you. O children of Israel, do not fight against the LORD God of your fathers, for you shall not prosper!" 13. But Jeroboam caused an ambush to go around behind them; so they were in front of Judah, and the ambush was behind them. 14. And when Judah looked around, to their surprise the battle line was at both front and rear; and they cried out to the LORD, and the priests sounded the trumpets. 15. Then the men of Judah gave a shout; and as the men of Judah shouted, it happened that God struck Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. 16. And the children of Israel fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hand. 17. Then Abijah and his people struck them with a great slaughter; so five hundred thousand choice men of Israel fell slain. 18. Thus the children of Israel were subdued at that time; and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied on the LORD God of their fathers. 19. And Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took cities from him: Bethel with its villages, Jeshanah with its villages, and Ephrain with its villages. 20. So Jeroboam did not recover strength again in the days of Abijah; and the LORD struck him, and he died. 21. But Abijah grew mighty, married fourteen wives, and begot twenty–two sons and sixteen daughters. 22. Now the rest of the acts of Abijah, his ways, and his sayings are written in the annals of the prophet Iddo.
1. So Abijah rested with his fathers, and they buried him in the City of David. Then Asa his son reigned in his place. In his days the land was quiet for ten years.
1. Now gather yourself in troops, O daughter of troops; He has laid siege against us; They will strike the judge of Israel with a rod on the cheek. 2. "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting." 3. Therefore He shall give them up, Until the time that she who is in labor has given birth; Then the remnant of His brethren Shall return to the children of Israel. 4. And He shall stand and feed His flock In the strength of the LORD, In the majesty of the name of the LORD His God; And they shall abide, For now He shall be great To the ends of the earth; 5. And this One shall be peace. When the Assyrian comes into our land, And when he treads in our palaces, Then we will raise against him Seven shepherds and eight princely men. 6. They shall waste with the sword the land of Assyria, And the land of Nimrod at its entrances; Thus He shall deliver us from the Assyrian, When he comes into our land And when he treads within our borders. 7. Then the remnant of Jacob Shall be in the midst of many peoples, Like dew from the LORD, Like showers on the grass, That tarry for no man Nor wait for the sons of men. 8. And the remnant of Jacob Shall be among the Gentiles, In the midst of many peoples, Like a lion among the beasts of the forest, Like a young lion among flocks of sheep, Who, if he passes through, Both treads down and tears in pieces, And none can deliver. 9. Your hand shall be lifted against your adversaries, And all your enemies shall be cut off. 10. "And it shall be in that day," says the LORD, "That I will cut off your horses from your midst And destroy your chariots. 11. I will cut off the cities of your land And throw down all your strongholds. 12. I will cut off sorceries from your hand, And you shall have no soothsayers. 13. Your carved images I will also cut off, And your sacred pillars from your midst; You shall no more worship the work of your hands; 14. I will pluck your wooden images from your midst; Thus I will destroy your cities. 15. And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury On the nations that have not heard."
1. Hear now what the LORD says: "Arise, plead your case before the mountains, And let the hills hear your voice. 2. Hear, O you mountains, the LORD’S complaint, And you strong foundations of the earth; For the LORD has a complaint against His people, And He will contend with Israel. 3. "O My people, what have I done to you? And how have I wearied you? Testify against Me. 4. For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, I redeemed you from the house of bondage; And I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. 5. O My people, remember now What Balak king of Moab counseled, And what Balaam the son of Beor answered him, From Acacia Grove to Gilgal, That you may know the righteousness of the LORD." 6. With what shall I come before the LORD, And bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With calves a year old? 7. Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, Ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8. He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God? 9. The LORD’S voice cries to the city––Wisdom shall see Your name: "Hear the Rod! Who has appointed it? 10. Are there yet the treasures of wickedness In the house of the wicked, And the short measure that is an abomination? 11. Shall I count pure those with the wicked scales, And with the bag of deceitful weights? 12. For her rich men are full of violence, Her inhabitants have spoken lies, And their tongue is deceitful in their mouth. 13. "Therefore I will also make you sick by striking you, By making you desolate because of your sins. 14. You shall eat, but not be satisfied; Hunger shall be in your midst. You may carry some away, but shall not save them ; And what you do rescue I will give over to the sword. 15. "You shall sow, but not reap; You shall tread the olives, but not anoint yourselves with oil; And make sweet wine, but not drink wine. 16. For the statutes of Omri are kept; All the works of Ahab’s house are done ; And you walk in their counsels, That I may make you a desolation, And your inhabitants a hissing. Therefore you shall bear the reproach of My people."
1. "And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, ‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: "I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. 2. "Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God. 3. "Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you. 4. "You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. 5. "He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. 6. "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."’ 7. "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, ‘These things says He who is holy, He who is true, "He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens": 8. "I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. 9. "Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie––indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you. 10. "Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. 11. "Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown. 12. "He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. And I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name. 13. "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."’ 14. "And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15. "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16. "So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17. "Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’ ––and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked–– 18. "I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19. "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 20. "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21. "To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22. "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."’"
