King James Version
13. And so it was, on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood before Moses from morning until evening. 14. So when Moses’ father–in–law saw all that he did for the people, he said, "What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit, and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?" 15. And Moses said to his father–in–law, "Because the people come to me to inquire of God. 16. "When they have a difficulty, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God and His laws." 17. So Moses’ father–in–law said to him, "The thing that you do is not good. 18. "Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself. 19. "Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you: Stand before God for the people, so that you may bring the difficulties to God. 20. "And you shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and the work they must do. 21. "Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 22. "And let them judge the people at all times. Then it will be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it will be easier for you, for they will bear the burden with you. 23. "If you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will also go to their place in peace." 24. So Moses heeded the voice of his father–in–law and did all that he had said. 25. And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people: rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 26. So they judged the people at all times; the hard cases they brought to Moses, but they judged every small case themselves. 27. Then Moses let his father–in–law depart, and he went his way to his own land.
1. In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on the same day, they came to the Wilderness of Sinai. 2. For they had departed from Rephidim, had come to the Wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness. So Israel camped there before the mountain. 3. And Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain, saying, "Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4. ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. 5. ‘Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. 6. ‘And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel." 7. So Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before them all these words which the LORD commanded him. 8. Then all the people answered together and said, "All that the LORD has spoken we will do." So Moses brought back the words of the people to the LORD. 9. And the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I come to you in the thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever." So Moses told the words of the people to the LORD. 10. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes. 11. "And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the LORD will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12. "You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13. ‘Not a hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot with an arrow ; whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain." 14. So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15. And he said to the people, "Be ready for the third day; do not come near your wives." 16. Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17. And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18. Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly. 19. And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by voice. 20. Then the LORD came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. 21. And the LORD said to Moses, "Go down and warn the people, lest they break through to gaze at the LORD, and many of them perish. 22. "Also let the priests who come near the LORD consecrate themselves, lest the LORD break out against them." 23. But Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai; for You warned us, saying, ‘Set bounds around the mountain and consecrate it.’" 24. Then the LORD said to him, "Away! Get down and then come up, you and Aaron with you. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the LORD, lest He break out against them." 25. So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.
1. <> O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens! 2. Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger. 3. When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, 4. What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? 5. For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. 6. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7. All sheep and oxen––Even the beasts of the field, 8. The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas. 9. O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!
1. < the tune of "Death of the Son." A Psalm of David.>> I will praise You , O LORD, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. 2. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High. 3. When my enemies turn back, They shall fall and perish at Your presence. 4. For You have maintained my right and my cause; You sat on the throne judging in righteousness. 5. You have rebuked the nations, You have destroyed the wicked; You have blotted out their name forever and ever. 6. O enemy, destructions are finished forever! And you have destroyed cities; Even their memory has perished. 7. But the LORD shall endure forever; He has prepared His throne for judgment. 8. He shall judge the world in righteousness, And He shall administer judgment for the peoples in uprightness. 9. The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of trouble. 10. And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You. 11. Sing praises to the LORD, who dwells in Zion! Declare His deeds among the people. 12. When He avenges blood, He remembers them; He does not forget the cry of the humble. 13. Have mercy on me, O LORD! Consider my trouble from those who hate me, You who lift me up from the gates of death, 14. That I may tell of all Your praise In the gates of the daughter of Zion. I will rejoice in Your salvation. 15. The nations have sunk down in the pit which they made; In the net which they hid, their own foot is caught. 16. The LORD is known by the judgment He executes; The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Meditation. Selah 17. The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God. 18. For the needy shall not always be forgotten; The expectation of the poor shall not perish forever. 19. Arise, O LORD, Do not let man prevail; Let the nations be judged in Your sight. 20. Put them in fear, O LORD, That the nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah
1. Why do You stand afar off, O LORD? Why do You hide in times of trouble? 2. The wicked in his pride persecutes the poor; Let them be caught in the plots which they have devised. 3. For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire; He blesses the greedy and renounces the LORD. 4. The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God ; God is in none of his thoughts. 5. His ways are always prospering; Your judgments are far above, out of his sight; As for all his enemies, he sneers at them. 6. He has said in his heart, "I shall not be moved; I shall never be in adversity." 7. His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is trouble and iniquity. 8. He sits in the lurking places of the villages; In the secret places he murders the innocent; His eyes are secretly fixed on the helpless. 9. He lies in wait secretly, as a lion in his den; He lies in wait to catch the poor; He catches the poor when he draws him into his net. 10. So he crouches, he lies low, That the helpless may fall by his strength. 11. He has said in his heart, "God has forgotten; He hides His face; He will never see." 12. Arise, O LORD! O God, lift up Your hand! Do not forget the humble. 13. Why do the wicked renounce God? He has said in his heart, "You will not require an account ." 14. But You have seen, for You observe trouble and grief, To repay it by Your hand. The helpless commits himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless. 15. Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man ; Seek out his wickedness until You find none. 16. The LORD is King forever and ever; The nations have perished out of His land. 17. LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will prepare their heart; You will cause Your ear to hear, 18. To do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, That the man of the earth may oppress no more.
1. Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. 2. Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, "It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3. "Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 4. "but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word." 5. And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6. whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them. 7. Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. 8. And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. 9. Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen. 10. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. 11. Then they secretly induced men to say, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God." 12. And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him , seized him, and brought him to the council. 13. They also set up false witnesses who said, "This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; 14. "for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us." 15. And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel.
1. Then the high priest said, "Are these things so?" 2. And he said, "Brethren and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran, 3. "and said to him, ‘Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.’ 4. "Then he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, when his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell. 5. "And God gave him no inheritance in it, not even enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no child, He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him. 6. "But God spoke in this way: that his descendants would dwell in a foreign land, and that they would bring them into bondage and oppress them four hundred years. 7. ‘And the nation to whom they will be in bondage I will judge,’ said God, ‘and after that they shall come out and serve Me in this place.’ 8. "Then He gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham begot Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot the twelve patriarchs.
