King James Version
1. Then the LORD sent Nathan to David. And he came to him, and said to him: "There were two men in one city, one rich and the other poor. 2. "The rich man had exceedingly many flocks and herds. 3. "But the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb which he had bought and nourished; and it grew up together with him and with his children. It ate of his own food and drank from his own cup and lay in his bosom; and it was like a daughter to him. 4. "And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare one for the wayfaring man who had come to him; but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him." 5. So David’s anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he said to Nathan, " As the LORD lives, the man who has done this shall surely die! 6. "And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity." 7. Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! Thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8. ‘I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your keeping, and gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if that had been too little, I also would have given you much more! 9. ‘Why have you despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in His sight? You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword; you have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the people of Ammon. 10. ‘Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ 11. "Thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will raise up adversity against you from your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12. ‘For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, before the sun.’" 13. So David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die. 14. "However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die." 15. Then Nathan departed to his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it became ill. 16. David therefore pleaded with God for the child, and David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. 17. So the elders of his house arose and went to him, to raise him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food with them. 18. Then on the seventh day it came to pass that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. For they said, "Indeed, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not heed our voice. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He may do some harm!" 19. When David saw that his servants were whispering, David perceived that the child was dead. Therefore David said to his servants, "Is the child dead?" And they said, "He is dead." 20. So David arose from the ground, washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house; and when he requested, they set food before him, and he ate. 21. Then his servants said to him, "What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child died, you arose and ate food." 22. And he said, "While the child was alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who can tell whether the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ 23. "But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me." 24. Then David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her and lay with her. So she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Now the LORD loved him, 25. and He sent word by the hand of Nathan the prophet: So he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD. 26. Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the people of Ammon, and took the royal city. 27. And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, "I have fought against Rabbah, and I have taken the city’s water supply . 28. "Now therefore, gather the rest of the people together and encamp against the city and take it, lest I take the city and it be called after my name." 29. So David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah, fought against it, and took it. 30. Then he took their king’s crown from his head. Its weight was a talent of gold, with precious stones. And it was set on David’s head. Also he brought out the spoil of the city in great abundance. 31. And he brought out the people who were in it, and put them to work with saws and iron picks and iron axes, and made them cross over to the brick works. So he did to all the cities of the people of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
1. Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying, 2. "Thus says the LORD: ‘He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes over to the Chaldeans shall live; his life shall be as a prize to him, and he shall live.’ 3. "Thus says the LORD: ‘This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it.’" 4. Therefore the princes said to the king, "Please, let this man be put to death, for thus he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man does not seek the welfare of this people, but their harm." 5. Then Zedekiah the king said, "Look, he is in your hand. For the king can do nothing against you." 6. So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the king’s son, which was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in the mire. 7. Now Ebed–Melech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs, who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon. When the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin, 8. Ebed–Melech went out of the king’s house and spoke to the king, saying: 9. "My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon, and he is likely to die from hunger in the place where he is. For there is no more bread in the city." 10. Then the king commanded Ebed–Melech the Ethiopian, saying, "Take from here thirty men with you, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he dies." 11. So Ebed–Melech took the men with him and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took from there old clothes and old rags, and let them down by ropes into the dungeon to Jeremiah. 12. Then Ebed–Melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, "Please put these old clothes and rags under your armpits, under the ropes." And Jeremiah did so. 13. So they pulled Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the dungeon. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison. 14. Then Zedekiah the king sent and had Jeremiah the prophet brought to him at the third entrance of the house of the LORD. And the king said to Jeremiah, "I will ask you something. Hide nothing from me." 15. Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you advice, you will not listen to me." 16. So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, " As the LORD lives, who made our very souls, I will not put you to death, nor will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life." 17. Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "Thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘If you surely surrender to the king of Babylon’s princes, then your soul shall live; this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live. 18. ‘But if you do not surrender to the king of Babylon’s princes, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans; they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hand.’" 19. And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, "I am afraid of the Jews who have defected to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they abuse me." 20. But Jeremiah said, "They shall not deliver you . Please, obey the voice of the LORD which I speak to you. So it shall be well with you, and your soul shall live. 21. "But if you refuse to surrender, this is the word that the LORD has shown me: 22. ‘Now behold, all the women who are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be surrendered to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say: "Your close friends have set upon you And prevailed against you; Your feet have sunk in the mire, And they have turned away again." 23. ‘So they shall surrender all your wives and children to the Chaldeans. You shall not escape from their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon. And you shall cause this city to be burned with fire.’" 24. Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "Let no one know of these words, and you shall not die. 25. "But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you and say to you, ‘Declare to us now what you have said to the king, and also what the king said to you; do not hide it from us, and we will not put you to death,’ 26. "then you shall say to them, ‘I presented my request before the king, that he would not make me return to Jonathan’s house to die there.’" 27. Then all the princes came to Jeremiah and asked him. And he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they stopped speaking with him, for the conversation had not been heard. 28. Now Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken. And he was there when Jerusalem was taken.
1. He also said to His disciples: "There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was wasting his goods. 2. "So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’ 3. "Then the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg. 4. ‘I have resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’ 5. "So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him , and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6. "And he said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ So he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ 7. "Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ So he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ 8. "So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light. 9. "And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. 10. "He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. 11. "Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches ? 12. "And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your own? 13. "No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." 14. Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him. 15. And He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God. 16. "The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it. 17. "And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one tittle of the law to fail. 18. "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery. 19. "There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. 20. "But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, 21. "desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22. "So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23. "And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24. "Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ 25. "But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26. ‘And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’ 27. "Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28. ‘for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29. "Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30. "And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31. "But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’"
