1RAJ 18 10-46

10.   " As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to hunt for you; and when they said, ‘ He is not here ,’ he took an oath from the kingdom or nation that they could not find you. 11.   "And now you say, ‘Go, tell your master, "Elijah is here "’! 12.   "And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from you, that the Spirit of the LORD will carry you to a place I do not know; so when I go and tell Ahab, and he cannot find you, he will kill me. But I your servant have feared the LORD from my youth. 13.   "Was it not reported to my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the LORD, how I hid one hundred men of the LORD’S prophets, fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water? 14.   "And now you say, ‘Go, tell your master, "Elijah is here ."’ He will kill me!" 15.   Then Elijah said, " As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely present myself to him today." 16.   So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17.   Then it happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, " Is that you, O troubler of Israel?" 18.   And he answered, "I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have , in that you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and have followed the Baals. 19.   "Now therefore, send and gather all Israel to me on Mount Carmel, the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table." 20.   So Ahab sent for all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together on Mount Carmel. 21.   And Elijah came to all the people, and said, "How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him." But the people answered him not a word. 22.   Then Elijah said to the people, "I alone am left a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23.   "Therefore let them give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it ; and I will prepare the other bull, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it . 24.   "Then you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who answers by fire, He is God." So all the people answered and said, "It is well spoken." 25.   Now Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose one bull for yourselves and prepare it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it ." 26.   So they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it , and called on the name of Baal from morning even till noon, saying, "O Baal, hear us!" But there was no voice; no one answered. Then they leaped about the altar which they had made. 27.   And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, "Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened." 28.   So they cried aloud, and cut themselves, as was their custom, with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them. 29.   And when midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice. But there was no voice; no one answered, no one paid attention. 30.   Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me." So all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down. 31.   And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, "Israel shall be your name." 32.   Then with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD; and he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed. 33.   And he put the wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood, and said, "Fill four waterpots with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice and on the wood." 34.   Then he said, "Do it a second time," and they did it a second time; and he said, "Do it a third time," and they did it a third time. 35.   So the water ran all around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water. 36.   And it came to pass, at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, "LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word. 37.   "Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that You are the LORD God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again." 38.   Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. 39.   Now when all the people saw it , they fell on their faces; and they said, "The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!" 40.   And Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!" So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the Brook Kishon and executed them there. 41.   Then Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain." 42.   So Ahab went up to eat and drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; then he bowed down on the ground, and put his face between his knees, 43.   and said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea." So he went up and looked, and said, " There is nothing." And seven times he said, "Go again." 44.   Then it came to pass the seventh time , that he said, "There is a cloud, as small as a man’s hand, rising out of the sea!" So he said, "Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot , and go down before the rain stops you.’" 45.   Now it happened in the meantime that the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel. 46.   Then the hand of the LORD came upon Elijah; and he girded up his loins and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

YEH 17

1.   And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2.   "Son of man, pose a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel, 3.   "and say, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: "A great eagle with large wings and long pinions, Full of feathers of various colors, Came to Lebanon And took from the cedar the highest branch. 4.   He cropped off its topmost young twig And carried it to a land of trade; He set it in a city of merchants. 5.   Then he took some of the seed of the land And planted it in a fertile field; He placed it by abundant waters And set it like a willow tree. 6.   And it grew and became a spreading vine of low stature; Its branches turned toward him, But its roots were under it. So it became a vine, Brought forth branches, And put forth shoots. 7.   "But there was another great eagle with large wings and many feathers; And behold, this vine bent its roots toward him, And stretched its branches toward him, From the garden terrace where it had been planted, That he might water it. 8.   It was planted in good soil by many waters, To bring forth branches, bear fruit, And become a majestic vine."’ 9.   "Say, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: "Will it thrive? Will he not pull up its roots, Cut off its fruit, And leave it to wither? All of its spring leaves will wither, And no great power or many people Will be needed to pluck it up by its roots. 10.   Behold, it is planted, Will it thrive? Will it not utterly wither when the east wind touches it? It will wither in the garden terrace where it grew."’" 11.   Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 12.   "Say now to the rebellious house: ‘Do you not know what these things mean ?’ Tell them , ‘Indeed the king of Babylon went to Jerusalem and took its king and princes, and led them with him to Babylon. 13.   ‘And he took the king’s offspring, made a covenant with him, and put him under oath. He also took away the mighty of the land, 14.   ‘that the kingdom might be brought low and not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand. 15.   ‘But he rebelled against him by sending his ambassadors to Egypt, that they might give him horses and many people. Will he prosper? Will he who does such things escape? Can he break a covenant and still be delivered? 16.   ‘ As I live,’ says the Lord GOD, ‘surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised and whose covenant he broke––with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die. 17.   ‘Nor will Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company do anything in the war, when they heap up a siege mound and build a wall to cut off many persons. 18.   ‘Since he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, and in fact gave his hand and still did all these things , he shall not escape.’" 19.   Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: " As I live, surely My oath which he despised, and My covenant which he broke, I will recompense on his own head. 20.   "I will spread My net over him, and he shall be taken in My snare. I will bring him to Babylon and try him there for the treason which he committed against Me. 21.   "All his fugitives with all his troops shall fall by the sword, and those who remain shall be scattered to every wind; and you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken." 22.   Thus says the Lord GOD: "I will take also one of the highest branches of the high cedar and set it out. I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and will plant it on a high and prominent mountain. 23.   "On the mountain height of Israel I will plant it; and it will bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a majestic cedar. Under it will dwell birds of every sort; in the shadow of its branches they will dwell. 24.   "And all the trees of the field shall know that I, the LORD, have brought down the high tree and exalted the low tree, dried up the green tree and made the dry tree flourish; I, the LORD, have spoken and have done it ."

IBR 11 1-19

1.   Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2.   For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. 3.   By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. 4.   By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks. 5.   By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, "and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6.   But without faith it is impossible to please Him , for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. 7.   By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. 8.   By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9.   By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; 10.   for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God. 11.   By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised. 12.   Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude––innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore. 13.   These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14.   For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15.   And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16.   But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country . Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. 17.   By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son , 18.   of whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed shall be called," 19.   concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.
